CAF Hosts One-Day Seminar

On Monday, May 10, 2004, the Children's AIDS Fund hosted a one-day seminar "Evaluating the Role of Fixed Dose Combination Drugs and the Issue of Drug Resistance in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS." The schedule featured internationally credentialed speakers addressing all aspects of the issues, from drug composition and regulation to cost to treatment issues and field experience in the developing world.

"There is much discussion today about appropriate treatment protocols for HIV/AIDS in the developing world, with an increasing focus on fixed dose combination (FDC) versus brand-name and generic drugs, as well as emerging resistance issues," said CAF founder and board member Shepherd Smith. "CAF is very concerned about these issues and is committed to providing save and effective treatment through all of our programs."

CAF's intent was to provide in depth information and thoughtful discussion opportunities for those concerned about these issues, since there has been a great deal of media coverage addressing price and availability without adequate discussion of aspects such as safety, efficacy, resistance, and viability.
