These estimates are based on UNAIDS/WHO reports. Adults are defined as women and men ages 15-49, an age range which covered people in their most sexually active years. Orphans are defined as children who have lost their mother or both parents to AIDS while they were under the age of 15; the cumulative number is estimated since the beginning of the epidemic.
